Tampa Bay Academy of Hope
Tampa Bay Academy of Hope recognizes and respects the uniqueness of each
child. Established in 1996, the program's primary mission is to foster a
love of learning in each student. Our curriculum skillfully weaves
artistic and practical disciplines into everyday academics, life skills,
and leadership skills. Students learn to follow their curiosity, to
think creatively, and to work both independently and cooperatively with
others.

READ to ACHIEVE (RAP)
The READ to ACHIEVE Program (RAP) is designed to
help participants reading below grade level to increase reading skills.
Literacy at Tampa Bay Academy of Hope involves planned, systematic
development of reading, writing, and oral language. Aligned,
research-based, carefully implemented reading curriculum is the backbone
of our success. Recognizing reading as an essential skill for learning
and success, our program strives to promote a life long love of the
written word by providing solid strategies designed to help students
gain information and learn from text. Students are required to read
daily. In addition, reading mentors/coaches are provided to read with
students at least one day per week. The premise is reading one day each
week for an hour with a mentor will help the student improve at least
one grade level after one year of participation. Partners throughout the
community will provide reading mentors to work with students at five
elementary schools throughout Hillsborough County. Students choose
books from an approved reading list. Upon completion of each book
students take a vocabulary and comprehension test to demonstrate the
successful completion of the book. Students earn points for each
successful completion and are awarded accordingly.
A
look at the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores for the
schools in our area: Booker T Washington, Just, Broward, Potter, and Oak
Park Elementary present a strong case for support for this project. In
the 2011-2012 school year we expect 125 students to connect with reading
mentors/coaches to participate in reading for one hour a week. Each
student will pre-test for current reading level and will test throughout
the program to demonstrate reading improvement. Based on the post test
it will be proven fact that readers are better students and achieve at
